Yes. Bamboo toilet paper is safe for septic systems. But the more interesting answer is not just yes, it is yes and here is why it works better than most of the alternatives you have probably been using.
The properties that make bamboo a good raw material for toilet paper, the fiber structure, the lower lignin content, the natural softness, are also the properties that make bamboo toilet paper a strong performer in a septic environment. This is not a marketing coincidence. It is fiber biology.
Why Bamboo Dissolves Faster Than Wood Pulp
The fiber structure difference
Standard toilet paper is made from wood pulp. Trees are cut, processed, and reduced to fibers that are then formed into paper. Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and its fiber structure is fundamentally different. Bamboo fibers are naturally longer and smoother than wood pulp fibers. That structural difference affects how the fibers bond in the papermaking process and, critically, how they break apart when they encounter water.
Bamboo fiber also contains significantly less lignin than wood fiber. Lignin is a complex organic polymer that gives trees structural rigidity. It is also resistant to microbial breakdown, which is part of what makes wood pulp slow to dissolve and slow to biodegrade. Lower lignin content in bamboo means faster dissolution in water and faster access for the bacteria that process organic material in your septic tank.
What the testing shows
Throne Bamboo is tested by SGS, an independent global testing organization. In SGS dissolution testing, Throne Bamboo begins breaking apart in as little as 10 minutes. The standard industry benchmark for toilet paper flushability is measured at 60 minutes. That six-to-one ratio is not subtle. It reflects a genuine difference in how bamboo fiber behaves in water compared to wood pulp alternatives.
For a septic system, dissolution speed translates directly into less solid accumulation. Paper that is breaking apart in 10 minutes is entering the biological processing environment of your tank in a fragmented, accessible form. Paper that is still largely intact at 30 minutes is sitting in your tank as solid material.
Why Bamboo Biodegrades More Completely
The lignin problem in wood pulp
The same lignin that slows wood pulp dissolution also slows biodegradation. The bacteria and fungi responsible for breaking down organic material in your septic tank have an easier time accessing bamboo cellulose than wood cellulose wrapped in lignin. This is reflected consistently in independent biodegradation testing, where bamboo toilet paper outperforms wood pulp alternatives at equivalent timeframes.
Throne Bamboo's biodegradation results
In SGS biodegradation testing, Throne Bamboo reaches 100 percent biodegradation within 28 days. The industry standard threshold for septic-safe certification is typically 95 to 98 percent. Reaching 100 percent means that, under the test conditions, the tested material fully biodegraded within the 28-day testing period, with no residual test material remaining at the end of the test.
Over the course of a year, the difference between 97 percent biodegradation and 100 percent biodegradation is not enormous in absolute terms. But it is real, and it compounds. A tank that receives paper with 3 percent residual per flush over several hundred flushes per year accumulates meaningfully more sludge than a tank where residual is zero.
What Bamboo Does Not Contain That Matters for Septic Systems
No fragrances that disrupt tank biology
Your septic tank depends on active populations of anaerobic bacteria to break down waste continuously. Those bacteria are sensitive to the compounds they are exposed to. Synthetic fragrances, which are complex chemical mixtures some of which have mild antimicrobial properties, can reduce bacterial activity over time when introduced through daily toilet paper use.
Throne Bamboo contains no synthetic fragrances. Not unscented-with-masking-fragrance. Actually no fragrance compounds of any kind. The bacterial environment in your tank is not being suppressed through the paper.
No dyes or optical brighteners
Dyes and optical brighteners are cosmetic additives with no functional role in toilet paper performance. They do not biodegrade efficiently, which means they pass through the tank and into the effluent moving toward your drain field. Their long-term effect on soil biology in the drain field area is not beneficial.

No PFAS or BPA
PFAS are a class of synthetic compounds that do not biodegrade in the environment or in the human body. Premium multi-ply conventional paper

Multi-ply density and added softening agents slow dissolution and biodegradation. The paper accumulates in the sludge layer faster than bamboo alternatives. It also often contains fragrances and dyes that bamboo products like Throne avoid entirely.
Products specifically marketed as septic safe
Many brands market their products specifically for septic use. Most of them are wood pulp based and achieve faster dissolution by reducing ply count and sheet thickness, which compromises performance in use. They are better than premium household paper for septic use. They are not as good as bamboo on the biodegradation metrics that matter most for long-term tank health.
Recycled toilet paper
Recycled toilet paper has real environmental benefits from a deforestation standpoint. However, the recycled pulp supply chain carries contamination risks, particularly for PFAS, that virgin fiber sources like bamboo do not. A 2023 peer-reviewed study detected PFAS in toilet paper samples across multiple regions, including recycled products. For households with septic systems where PFAS absorption through the perianal area is a concern, virgin bamboo fiber tested for PFAS absence is a cleaner choice.
Practical Questions About Using Bamboo in Your Septic System
Do I need to change my tank treatment?
No. Bamboo toilet paper can be used with standard septic tanks and treatments, both enzyme-based and bacterial. Because bamboo contains no additives that suppress tank bacteria, switching to bamboo may actually allow your tank treatment to work more effectively. The biology your treatment is trying to support is no longer being partially suppressed by fragrance compounds from the paper.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
The benefits of switching to bamboo are cumulative and not immediately visible. Your tank will not pump itself. But over time, the sludge layer will grow more slowly, sensor fouling will be less of an issue if you have an RV or marine system, and the effluent reaching your drain field will contain less residual paper material. Those benefits can show up in longer intervals between pump-outs and in the long-term health of your drain field.
What kind of testing has Throne Bamboo done?
Throne Bamboo has undergone independent third-party testing by SGS labs for both performance and chemical content. Our toilet paper has been evaluated using flushability tests FG501, FG502, FG503, FG504 and FG506A, with testing showing that it begins dissolving in as little as 10 minutes and reaches 100 percent biodegradation within 28 days under test conditions.
We have also had our toilet paper and paper towels independently tested for PFAS, BPA, phthalates and halogens. SGS testing found BPA was not detected, and the products passed CPSIA Section 108 testing for phthalates. Testing also included Total Organic Fluorine, which is used to screen for fluorine associated with PFAS, as well as halogen testing.
This gives us third-party data on both how our paper performs and what is — and isn’t — detected in it, rather than relying solely on product claims or manufacturing partner certifications.
